That wasn't a power, just a grinder specifically designed for horses.

Mike: A "horse POWER" is a geared device that has arms branching out from it that horses are harnessed to. They cam in all different sizes depending on how many horses you wanted to hitch to it and on the power requirements of the machine you wanted to power. The horses walk in a circle relatively slowly. The POWER speeds up the rotation and transmits it through a rotating drive shaft, similar to a universal PTO driveline on a tractor but in this case it is referred to as a "tumbling rod". Most machines that were powered by horse powers had special input shafts to accept the tumbling rod. In other cases, the tumbling rod could be hooked up to a belt pulley and you could run belt powered equipment like corn shellers, hay balers, sawmills, and threshers.

Jeb

> Date: Fri, 5 Dec 2008 03:20:27 -0800
> From: steamenginesmitty@yahoo.com
> Subject: Re: [Gristmillers] Wanted---A 'horse' power.
> To: gristmillers@gristmillers.com
>
> http://www.enginads.com/classifieds/showcat.php/cat/16
>
> There was a power unit on at the link above a while back for horses.
