[Gristmillers] grits screen size

I used a rotary bolter like John G. It has a 28 on the meal end and 12 and a 14 screen on the grits end you end up with fine and coarse grits . I mix the two together and sell them, never had a complaint. Sometime we do have cust. who want to catch the coarse grits for things like shrimp and grits, but most like them together. I think on the shaker type bolter one screen to separate the meal and one size for grits is the way to go. John C.

I used a side shaker for a couple of years. I put 2 screens (one grits and one meal) on with only 1/4 inch between them and did it all at once. Saved alot of time that way. The top one was longer so the waste would fall off in the clear. Grits would fall thru the top one, roll off the 2nd one and the meal would fall thru and out the bottom.

In the grits separator the use of 2 screens (12) & (14) gives you 2 coarseness of grits. The grits pass through both screens, the smaller grits pass through the 14 screen and then the larger grits drop through the 12 screen. The left overs pass all the way through.
If you are using a side shaker you will most likely have to screen your grinding twice to get your grits. First with a meal screen to let the meal and flour drop out and then with your grits screen to let the grits drop out. what comes off the end on the last screening should be hull or or cracked corn that is too big for grits.
