[Gristmillers] meadows speed

Yes, corn (what else is there in SC?) I have another 20" I did a few years
back, that I have been pulling with a 6hp M throttle. It does well for the
small amount I do at a time. This mill is my second attempt, and it turned
out SOOO much better. I had more wood working tools and more knowledge than
last time. I belted it up to the 6hp Famous (hit-n-miss) last night for the
first time and it did real good, also at a slow amount of feed. I don't
have enough corn to feed heavy anyway. I just grind for myself and a few
close friends. Gotta have them stone ground grits!! Last night I had the
engine just under 300rpm with the mill turning around 400 if I remember
correctly. I like the advice about running it until it stops up then speed
up 50 rpm. That sounds like a good way to go for a hobby mill. When this
one comes back from Franklin, NC, it will take the place of the other 20" in
the mill shed belted to the M. The product out of what little I ran through
it last night seemed acceptable. A little more meal than grits, and less
scratch than grits.
I'll try to post a couple of pics today or tomorrow of it belted to the
Famous.

Congratulations, I know the work involved. I know what the book says and hp
reqm'ts but you do with what you got sometimes. My 20" runs at approx. 375
rpm vs 700 with 6 hp hit & miss vs 8 hp throttle gov,(and set at mid
speed). All wrong by most of what I read. But I put out 100+ lb/hr with
13-15% waste ( if I don't mess up). I think the wheels dressings have a lot
to do with it. And that's something I know little about. My 16" runs at
rated speed with what I thought looks like excellent dressed stones but not
near the performance of product ratios. I assume you are milling corn.
Best,
Ron

Evening everyone,
I have finished the 20" IHC Meadows I have been working on. I got an
excellent pour on the bedstone and it grinds like nobody's business!! I
have been pulling it with the F12 for testing purposes, but before I move it
into the mill shed for good, I wanted to take it to the Franklin, NC Early
Farm Days Show. I'm going to pull it with a friend's 1908 6hp Famous. What
is a desirable speed to turn the mill for a good grind?
I'm just going to grind for fun, not to sell.
Thanks
