  That sounds more like a worn out sprocket if you were using brand new chain. Look on the round "hinge" section of the chain and see if you can see a number like 35, 45, or 53. One of those numbers was an old number and has been replaced by a newer one (such as #35 chain is no longer available but is compatible with #53 chain).
